What you need to know about hair color
Now that you’ve made the decision to color your hair, we have no doubt you’re on the way to a gorgeous new look! But before you get started with coloring your hair, there a few important things you should keep in mind.
First, if you’re lightening your hair with Naturtint, it’s best to stay within a 2-shade range to avoid brassiness or unwanted results. But, if you’re looking for a dramatic or bold color change, feel free to go as dark as you’d like!
Next, be sure to check the color chart. Of course, you want your hair to look like the model on the box, but it’s also unrealistic to think that your hair color will look the same as hers. Hair results are different from person to person. There are many factors that could affect the results, but your current color, hair thickness, and skin tone are a few examples.
How to prep your hair
To maximize the results from your box of hair color, it’s important to wait 24-48 hours after your last wash to retain the protective layer of oils from the scalp.
Also, be sure to test out your hair color on a small amount of hair before using the entire box so you know what results to expect. The easiest way to do this is by conducting a hair strand test. For a step-by-step breakdown on how to do a hair strand test, check out our blog post here.
Gather your supplies
Just as a surgeon has all their tools nearby, you’ll want to place all items needed in the hair coloring process on your counter so that they’re easily accessible.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A box of Naturtint hair color including: box developer, colorant, instructions, conditioner, and disposable gloves.
- A towel. You can use an old towel or cloth that you don’t mind staining to protect your countertops and lay out your supplies.
- Disposable gloves (included in your Naturtint box). It’s a good idea to have these on both when applying the color and rinsing it out.
- Protective cream. Apply along your hairline to protect your skin and guard from stains.
- Comb or brush. Separate your hair into 4 sections before you begin coloring!
- Timer. Be sure to keep track of time either on your phone or with a physical timer. That way you can kick back and relax while your color develops.
- Makeup removing wipes (optional). You can use makeup removing wipes to clean up any hair color spills.
- Handheld mirror. Use a handheld mirror to ensure that you’re not missing any spots in the back of your head when coloring.
How to get the most out of your box of hair color
Now, you’re ready to apply the box of hair color. A quick reminder to separate your hair into 4 sections and follow the steps below!
applying the hair color
To get the best results from your product, it’s important to use the color on dry hair. Hair saturated in water won’t retain color as well, and the product may become diluted, creating an undesirable result.
Be sure to begin coloring at your roots because this is where regrowth occurs first. The roots will also need the most processing time.
Only looking to do quick touchup on your roots? We’ve got you covered with our Root Retouch line that blends seamlessly with your existing hair color to provide up to 100% gray coverage, naturally radiant color, and scalp protection in as little as 10 minutes.
If you’re just touching up your roots, start there. Or, for all over color, apply color to the top layer first before pinning up the top layer and moving on to coloring lower layers. This will spread the color evenly and help you avoid patches of different shades. You may have seen your hairdressers use a similar process!
time to rinse and condition your hair
After you’ve let your hair color develop for the appropriate amount of time, now it’s time to rinse it out. Be sure to rinse until the water runs clear in order to ensure that your color lasts as long as possible. To assist the rinsing process, you can run your fingers through your hair.
Once you’ve rinsed out the color, your next step is to condition your hair with the conditioner included in your Naturtint box. Conditioning and closing the cuticle is the final step in retaining the color.
Pro tip: To extend the life of your hair color, we recommend using a shampoo or conditioner designed specifically for color-treated hair. Our gentle formulas gently hydrate while maintaining color, vibrancy, and shine.
check out your results
Depending on how quickly you need to dry your hair, either air dry or gently blow dry your hair and use a brush or comb to style your hair into your everyday style.
Now it’s time for the big reveal! Check out your results in the mirror and use a handheld mirror to help you see the back of your head and make sure the color is what you’d hoped for!
