How to make your hair color last longer: 6 easy steps
Here you go! Follow along for our best tips for how to make hair color last longer!
1. Prep your hair before coloring
Before you begin coloring, you’ll want to ensure your hair is dry and clean, as a build-up of styling products can affect your color result. We recommend coloring your hair at least 24 hours after your last wash. This will allow some of the scalp’s natural oils to be produced and will help protect your scalp during coloring. By taking this simple step, you’re setting yourself up for success and longer lasting hair color!
2. Rinse and wash your hair with lukewarm water
When you rinse out your hair color, and in between coloring, it’s important that you stay away from hot water. The warmer the water, the more the cuticle will be open (which will release your precious hair color). Instead, rinse your hair with the coldest water you can stand to seal the cuticle shut. This will ensure long-lasting color, keep your locks hydrated, and eliminate split ends.
3. Wash less often if you can
If you over wash your hair, you’re guaranteed to see your color fade quicker. Washing tends to speed up fading. But, if you feel that your hair is getting greasy and do need to wash, good news – there are shampoos that are specifically designed for color-treated hair!
4. Use a color safe, pH balanced shampoo
Like we said, don’t over-shampoo your hair as this will cause your color to fade faster. However, when you do shampoo your hair, it’s important to use a shampoo that is specifically designed for color-treated hair like Naturtint’s Color Care Shampoo. These types of shampoos will be gentler on your tresses. And, while the shampoo won’t restore your hair color, it’ll help keep your color vibrant.
5. Condition well after coloring
When coloring your hair, it’s just as important to invest in the products you’ll use in between coloring as it is the hair color itself. That’s why we recommend using a good daily conditioner like Naturtint’s Color Care Conditioner. Color Care Conditioner’s formula gently hydrates your hair while helping it maintain color, vibrancy, and shine.
6. Don’t overuse hot tools
Now that you’ve achieved your perfect hair color, don’t blow it! Blow dryers, straighteners, and other hot tools may speed up the color fading process. If you can, we recommend avoiding using hot tools for at least the first week after your color your hair. However, if you must use them, turn the temperature down. Similar to hot water, heat from blow dryers and straighteners can open the cuticle layer and cause your hair color to fade quicker. Always remember that a sealed cuticle leads to long-lasting hair color!
The big picture
By following these simple steps, you’ll be able to keep your hair looking radiant for weeks before it’s time to color again. Now that you know how to make your hair color last longer, we have no doubt this will help you save money by coloring less in the long run, and free up time for everything else you have to do!
