Biobased: What it Means and Why it’s Important

Nowadays, it seems like everyone is talking about cleaner beauty as the focus around being kinder to our environment and ourselves increases. But at Naturtint, “cleaner beauty” isn’t just a buzzword; it’s part of our DNA.

For over 25 years, Naturtint has been at the forefront of cleaner beauty and reducing chemicals in hair color. In 1994, Maria del Pino Navarro, General Director of Labortorios Phergal (Naturtint’s manufacturer) traveled to the US to learn about hair care and coloring from top professionals. Encouraged by founder and General Director José Elvira Gálvez, Pino spent countless hours in a lab working on an ammonia-free hair color formula that she felt would empower women (in Spain and around the globe) to feel confident about their hair color and themselves.

From the beginning, we’ve prided ourselves on supplying products with ingredients derived from plants, seeds, and oils, chosen for their known benefits to the hair and scalp. Ingredients that you’ll never find in our products include: Ammonia, Parabens, Heavy metals, Gluten, Silicone, Artificial fragrance,  Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), Animal products, Cocamide DEA, Paraffins, and Mineral oils.

Today, our commitment to scientific innovation and providing you with cleaner beauty options remains the same. That’s why we’re excited to share that Naturtint permanent hair color exceeds minimum USDA Certified Biobased content for Hair Styling Products and is now a USDA Certified Biobased Product. And, we’ve made history as the first permanent hair color to be certified by the USDA BioPreferred® Program.

What sets USDA BioPreferred Certified Products apart?

Simply put, these products are better for you and the environment. Biobased ingredients are derived from plants and other renewable agricultural, marine, and forestry materials. They also provide a naturally-derived alternative to conventional petroleum-derived ingredients. Naturtint permanent hair color is considered 79% biobased.

Naturtint also uses the Global International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Global Standard 16128. This standard defines naturally-derived as plant or mineral derived materials and water that have undergone limited processing. Naturtint naturally-derived percentage varies between product lines and ranges from 92% to 99%.

Why did Naturtint pursue biobased certification?

The main reason is because we’re committed to maintaining the highest standards and are always innovating to provide you with the best and most natural options. At Naturtint, we believe in cleaner beauty solutions that empower others to own their style, feel confident, and have a viable alternative to salon treatments.

We understand that no permanent hair color can be completely natural. After all, there must be some synthetic ingredients for hair color to work. However, Naturtint strives to use the highest-quality formulas with the lowest number of chemical ingredients possible. Learn more about our commitment to cleaner beauty here
